The Tanger Exile

Stéphane Guibourgé - Photographs by Roland Beaufre

Tanger. The Palace crumbles on the hill, and John Cawler is assailed by memories. He remembers Jean, the young writer he had once taken under his wing. His brother emerges from his home, reopening old wounds. Pierre is searching for Jean, who vanished with his literary dreams, his love for Tanger, and its legend above all. The city trembles in the light and slowly advances towards the darkness.

A Police Captain, tasked with finding Jean, investigates the murder of a young woman discovered in the midst of a construction site. He alone still perceives the true song of the city, far from the myth and gilded lies. Far from the ghosts that still linger. Renowned authors, rock stars in decline, painters and photographers, selfish socialites incapable of seeing the city, the world, and life as they are on the edge of the Rif. He alone measures the impact of Genet's words when he evokes "Tanger-The Betrayal." Because here, nothing is truly as appearances would have it; one must always pay the price. Crossing the mirrors. Or becoming lost.

Stéphane Guibourgé is the author of eight books, including Une vie ailleurs and Le Train fantôme, published by Flammarion. As a photographer, he has published Cuba/Yankee (Nicolas Chaudun éditeur). He collaborates with Le Figaro Magazine, among others.

Roland Beaufre was born in Bonn in 1952. He discovered Tanger and Morocco in 1963 and has been returning there regularly ever since. He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He has created numerous books, including Paris des hommes (Minerva, 2006), Voyage dans le Maroc juif (Somogy, 2003), Extravagances (Flammarion, 2001), and Les Goûters de Garance (Editions du Regard, 1994). He has contributed to numerous international magazines since 1978, currently to The World of Interiors, Mezonin (Russia), and Maison française.
